Notes:
Bert Hardy was born in 1913, the eldest of seven children in a poor working-class family. Leaving school at fourteen, he started work as a delivery boy for a film processing laboratory. Captivated by photography, he bought a secondhand camera and started on a career that led to his employment as a full-time member of Picture Post, the foremost magazine of its time. Bert became a mainstay and his images are amongst its best known. A selection of his stunning images of Britain at War and in the austerity years that followed are reproduced in this first major book on his work. This long overdue tribute marks the centenary of his birth and places him amongst the best of twentieth century photographers.
