A talk by Adam Baxter of the Marlow Society: "The impact of the railways on the river and Marlow 1831-1891"
Great Marlow was for centuries a significant inland port. By the early nineteenth century the Thames was a major commercial artery, but on 1st June, 1838 the Great Western Railway reached Maidenhead. This permanently changed the role of the river and quickly altered the town of Marlow forever.
Our speaker, Adam Baxter, has lived in Marlow for 40 years and is a member of the Marlow Society.
The talk is on Friday 6 June from 11am at Marlow Library. Refreshments provided. Spaces are limited so please book your free space/s with library staff, either in-person or by emailing lib-mar@buckinghamshire.gov.uk.
